The Chapel of Rest
People say goodbye to loved ones in their own personal way. Some people need to sit with the deceased, often more than once, to begin the grieving process and say farewell.
Our Chapel of Rest is situated a few miles from Bristol at our Head Office (Memorial Woodlands near Thornbury) and bereaved family and friends are encouraged to visit their recently deceased as many times as they feel the need to do so.
The Chapel of Rest is warm, secluded and very private. We have sofas and chairs if a family is visiting as a group and there are candles for you to light and an ample supply of tissues.
All we ask is that you make an appointment (within office hours) and one of the team will ensure the Chapel of Rest is prepared for you.
What is a Chapel of Rest?
A chapel of rest is a designated space, usually a set of rooms where family and friends can come and visit their loved one before the funeral. It is a way for the person’s close friends and family can pay their respects in a peaceful environment, undisturbed.
The chapel of rest is where the funeral directors will lay the body of the person before the funeral takes place.
What to Expect
Once a person is taken into our care, we will then prepare them before placing them in a coffin in the chapel of rest. Once they are prepared, family and friends of the person can arrange a suitable time and day to visit.
Many people find that visiting their loved one in the chapel of rest before the funeral, for even just a few moments in peace not surrounded by other mourners, can be a great help in coming to terms with the death, marking an important point in the grieving process. While it can be a difficult experience, it can also be a healing experience. Of course, you may not wish to visit, which is perfectly acceptable. If you aren’t sure whether you want to visit or not, our staff can help support and advise you in making this decision. Ultimately, there is no right or wrong choice, only what is best for you. If you would like a member of our team to accompany you in the chapel of rest, we can accommodate your wishes.
When your loved one comes into our care, they will be treated with the utmost respect and attention. Our caring and professional staff are highly trained and treat each person with care, dignity and compassion.
You can choose for your loved one to be dressed in their own clothes, which you can provide, or in a range of suitable gowns. You may also wish to bring personal or sentimental items to the chapel to place into the coffin beside your loved one. If you wish to do this, speak to a member of our team to ensure the item can be left in the coffin.
